Psychiatry a religion?

SCROLL DOWN FOR THE SPAGHETTI MONSTER

RANT

NOTE: Those that complain that the Pharma co. make billions off of psychiatry, it is the law of demand and supply. People demand a solution to the devils and angels inside them.

A majority of psychiatrists have Munchausen syndrome. This developes from the need to drug-medicate their patient. The patient becomes addicted to the drug and the narcissistic ( Look at me! I need help! I’m lonely! Am I important?) “patient” role. Illegal drugs do not work to fix personal problems any better than legal ones. Medicines are for illness, drugs are for coping with life, coping with the burden of knowledge/intelligence we have had since we ate of the tree in the garden of Eden.

Existential pain can be an emergency at times, necessary to med-drug to calm someone down, or lift someone up, but physically (photographs and microscopes measurable) existential pain is typically NOT LIFE THREATENING like real disease. Psychiatrists need to feel and execute that they are “real” doctors by issuing “medicine”.

There are pros and cons to psychiatric treatment. Psychiatry as a medicine tries to make people functional again. In forced psychiatry the (patients) emotion of fear destroys the feeling of trust, so forced psychiatry is inherently flawed as a healing method. Then there is the paradox of we must keep the patient safe, so “we” deprive the patient of liberty, but in the process of taking away an adult persons legal rights, you make that person a crazy person.

Forgiveness works in Christianity, and it also works in psychiatry. In order for lay people/ common sane people to forgive and also find a reason for “wrong” behaviour, they often use the diagnosis of “mental illness” in others to lose their own feelings of fear and anger. Their feelings are converted to pity or sympathy or compassion. They feel the need to help the “ill” person. Forgiveness works when we don’t hate the homeless for being homeless, because they are mentally ill.
It wasn’t them that did the crime it was the mental illness. BUT this act of forgiveness might be a trap of the sin of pride in the forgiver. I forgive these beggars for their mental-illness/homelessness and it makes me feel good to be above them to judge them so.

The sin-homelessness-mental illness is from a disease that must be cured by pharmaceuticals.

See Liz Spikol and comments http://blogs.philadelphiaweekly.com/trouble/2009/09/16/an-army-of-mentally-ill

The problem with help is the metaphorical “You can leed a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.” For a successfully recovery, the mentally ill person has to figure out what they are doing wrong and want to change it themselves. Psychiatric meds-chemicals like antipsychotics make self-reflection impossible, a fully functioning brain brings on “psychosis” (emotions , intelligence and imagination), the patient must then take medication out of fear of his/her psychosis, so the patient is trapped in the role of a patient.

I have been psychotic, so understanding from the “sane” person is a civilized way to deal with insanity, and I thank the sane for their mercy. It is a chicken and egg paradox though of which came first, psychosis or psychiatric help that made me psychotic.

Golden Calf

Exodus 32 K.J.V.

When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting below them, he exclaimed to Moses, “It sounds as if there is a war in the camp!”

But Moses replied, “No, it’s neither a cry of victory nor a cry of defeat. It is the sound of a celebration.”

When they came near the camp, Moses saw the calf and the dancing. In terrible anger, he threw the stone tablets to the ground, smashing them at the foot of the mountain.

He took the calf they had made and melted it in the fire. And when the metal had cooled, he ground it into powder and mixed it with water. Then he made the people drink it.

35And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

Generally the mentally ill person doesn’t know what is wrong, or why they are judged mentally ill and can not change without the knowledge of what is wrong.

To the mentally ill, ones actions and feelings are coming from some mysterious place outside themselves, that drugs will magically fix. The medical disease model of mental illness.

Psychiatry

noun

the practice or science of diagnosing and treating mental disorders.

If it walks like a duck , makes sounds like a duck, flys like a duck, it is highly likely it is a duck.

Occam’s Razor
one should not increase, beyond what is necessary, the number of entities required to explain anything.

“mental disorder” is defined by the societies current social norms, these “disorders” are NOT lab test detectable like any other disease.

Is psychiatry a religion?:

The Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine just published a recent, and, presumably, slightly tongue in cheek article, drawing parallels between psychiatry, clinical psychology and traditional religious practices.

In reality, it’s not really attempting to address the question of whether psychiatry is a form of religion. Instead, it’s really asking whether psychiatry is now fulfilling some of the social roles that, for many people, were previously occupied by religion.

These include parallels between confession and therapy, proselytization and mental health campaigns, religious hierarchy and medical authority, sacraments and medication, and holy texts and diagnostic manuals.

The ‘psychiatry is a religion’ argument is weak, however, as despite similarities in some functions, none of these are core features of religion. As identified by cognitive anthropologist Pascal Boyer, the single common feature of all religious is a preoccupation with unseen sentient beings, of which psychiatry says nothing.

“unseen sentient beings, of which psychiatry says nothing”

What? Psychiatry sells the magical unseen antidepressant molecule. When the facts say it is statistically the same as a placebo.(Placebos WORK as a person believes in it. ie a religion)

Can you see the “sentient being”, the magical molecule of Cymbalta that gives only “good” thoughts/good chemical reactions?
Cymbalta (duloxetine) was only approved in 2004 but it’s surged ahead with a 627% increase in sales, earning $667 million for Eli Lilly.

The chemicals are a means of control. As Thomas Szasz says people need a scapegoat to blame their and others behaviour on.
The devil was the one we blamed in the past for our bad behaviour, God and the devil being dead, today it is unbalanced brain chemicals.

Unbalanced (unseen sentient beings ) brain chemicals have replaced the devil, so yes psychiatry is a religion.

______

Psychiatry might be considered evil , if you consider suppressing or changing human free will as an evil act. In the animal kingdom there is no evil or good, it is the law of survival of the fittest. Psychiatrists have power and they use it. That psychiatrists can claim themselves as healers and not psychopaths is in their power as the disease of mental illness is a monopoly.

Psychopathy is a personality disorder whose hallmark is a lack of empathy. Robert Hare, a researcher in the field describes psychopaths as “intraspecies predators[3][4] who use charm, manipulation, intimidation, sex and violence[5][6][7] to control others and to satisfy their own needs. Lacking in conscience and empathy, they take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without guilt or remorse”.

Psychiatrists must have clinical detachment an emotionlessness, ergo no empathy.

I do remember one time in medical school, when I was very frustrated trying to care for an ornery patient at the VA, when a senior resident took me aside and told me that, “sometimes, it’s OK to hate your patients.” It was something of a seminal moment for me. Prior to that I had the wide-eyed naive idea that I would enjoy and like all of them, I think. Getting permission to dislike my patients was a big step in learning that clinical detachment that is essential to this job.

Having been given that permission, though, it can be a challenge to keep it in check.

The psychiatrist does not have to spend time in prison-hospital, take the poisons-medicines and all the things the patient must willingly take to be a good patient.

The psychiatrist is making a product, and the product must not complain or object to his-her masters.

Only a religion has the power to overturn facts. Facts like murder.
Opinion of Psychiatry is better/stronger than facts.

Absolution of Sin

Absolution: “Dominus noster Jesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis (suspensionis) et interdicti in quantum possum et tu indiges. [making the Sign of the Cross:] Deinde, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.”

Translation: “May our Lord Jesus Christ absolve you; and by His authority I absolve you from every bond of excommunication (suspension) and interdict, so far as my power allows and your needs require. [making the Sign of the Cross:] Thereupon, I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”

Watson: Do you think they felt they were murdering people?
Müller-Hill: There it’s most interesting that two other chiefs here, medical doctors and psychiatrists who were running this place here, kind of got away with it in 1962 by saying that they couldn’t see anything wrong with killing those incurably insane, and they had learned this in the medical courses at the universities and so they couldn’t see anything wrong, so in fact they got free. And so this went then up from court to court, and in 1972 the German Supreme Court decided that indeed, since they didn’t see anything wrong there was nothing wrong with it, and they could be free.

Gene clues to schizophrenia risk

“Scientists have identified thousands of tiny genetic variations which together could account for more than a third of the inherited risk of schizophrenia.

They also showed the condition is genetically similar to bipolar disorder also known as manic depression.

The findings came from work by three separate teams, who analysed DNA from thousands of people.

The studies – the biggest ever into the genetics of schizophrenia – appear in the journal Nature.

“ We fully expect that future work will assemble them into meaningful pathways that will teach us about the biology of schizophrenia ”
Dr Pamela Sklar Massachusetts General Hospital

The findings suggest that schizophrenia is much more complex than previously thought, and can arise not only from rare genetic variants, but common ones as well.”

Psychiatry needs the genetic keys to make robots out of human beings. Make their slaves predictable and orderly. A utopian world.

Not having much success though as the figurative world (of good and bad thoughts as brain chemical reactions) doesn’t exist in reality.

A paradox can not exist in reality ( Wizards Ninth rule).

sane behavior is attributed to reasons (choices), insane behavior to causes (diseases)”, Thomas Szasz.

Criminal behaviour , like all behaviour is not genetic.
